Cambodian Building Organization (CBO)

 CBO works to find sustainable ways to empower the marginalized and the vulnerable groups of rural communities in Cambodia to get out their way from poverty Background 

The returnee and professors, who have different skills on human rights, rural community development, social environment, integrated agriculture, vocational generation training, water/hygiene, national resource management and HIV/AIDS came together to form Cambodian Building Organization (CBO) in order to empower the marginalized, vulnerable groups and majority of formerly returnee families living in Battambang province, the third largest province hard-hit by prolonged civil war in Cambodia CBO is locally registered with the council of the Ministers on 6^th/March/2001 and with the Ministry of interior on 2^nd/May/2002 

Vision  

Our vision works to find sustainable ways to empower the marginalized and vulnerable groups live in peace and justice 

Key strategies reduce poverty of rural communities in participating with Royal Cambodian Government’s policy 

1-Increase incomes of rural communities

2-Building Capacity to local governmental counterparts to take over the project while the CBO phases out

3-Perform partnership project with local and international institutions in order to collect the available and capacity to manage social environment and natural resources

4-Empower children’s rights  

Key activities reduce poverty of rural communities in participating with Royal Cambodian Government’s policy 

Increase incomes for rural communities through (integrated approaches) 

 1.      Vocational training for income generation

2.      Self-help through the independent Team for service (ITS) performance

3.      Integrated agricultural activities such as: (cow, pig, chicken and mixed crop banks etc….)

4.      Installing pump wells, water tanks to collect water and raindrop to store for drinking

 Empower the community people and local governmental counterparts through (Empowerment and Rights-based approach)

Previous/actual sources of funding

Types of activities undertaken in the past and on-going activities

• 2000, CBO run community sanitation project by drilling 7 pump wells for 135 families(675 persons) including 41% of children from 3 villages benefited from the 7 pump wells in Battambang province, Cambodia
• 2000 to 2008, CBO has organized English literacy project in Battambang for rural children, up to now more than 400 children learning English
• 2001 to 2002, CBO installed 18 Open wells for 270 families(1,350 persons) in five villages of Battambang province, used water from 18 open culvert wells
• 2002, CBO has carried vocational project by training 60 workers for making culvert, jar, house concrete, household vases etc…
• 2002, CBO built community rice storage (wide 6m, length 8 and height 2.5 m) and lending rice seed to 95 families in Battambang ( approximately 475 people benefited from the project).
• 2003, CBO organize integrated basic human rights awareness workshop (key topics focus on decentralization, community participation for development, networking, conflict management and women trafficking) for 900 people in 12 villages of Battambang, Cambodia. 54% of participants are women
• 2002-2003, CBO drilled 30 pump wells for 600 families (approximately 3,000 people benefited from the project) in 12 villages of Battambang province.
• 2002 to 2003, CBO set up cow, chicken, pig and crops bank for 275 families (approximately 1,375 people benefited from the project)

• 2004, CBO built one irrigation canal 2,500 m by installing four water pumps on floating ports, building reservoir, 100 concrete canal meters, installing 24 locations of culverts with wings, two water gates renovation, 2,500 m3 excavation. This project provided water for 375 families to irrigate 76 hectares for their farm and rice-field.
• 2006 to June,2006 CBO has built basins by installing culverts to save raindrops for poor families to use in shortage season for 18 families in Koh Kralar district of Battambang province.
• 2006, CBO installed 18 basins to save raindrop in Battambang provice for 18 families in Sangkae district
• 2005 to April, 2006 CBO organized the seasonal agricultural training for income generation and food security for 222 families( estimated 1,110 beneficiaries) in three villages of Battambang province
• 2006, CBO installed 16 water tanks for collecting raindrops in two villages in Battambang province
• 2007-2008, CBO is a partner of Concept of wastewater treatment and implementation of a pilot plant in the city of Battambang province(CONTRIB), EU-Asia Proc Eco program phase II funded 500,000 Euro for January/2007 to December/2008
• 2008, CBO constructs 15 water tanks, each water tank has size (5 m x 3 m x 3  m) in 15 primary schools and two health centers in Svay Chek district of Bantheay Meanchey province, there are 4,500 students drinking good source of water from these water tanks
• 2008, in conjunction with water tank project, CBO worked with communities, local authorities and school masters in Svay Chek district to organize half day orientation workshops for child and women trafficking in 15 schools, there are 750 students selected for workshops (57% are girl students)
• 2007-2008, CBO constructed two community ponds in Svay Chek district, Bantheay Meanchey province, Cambodia. 235 families (1,175 persons) used water from two ponds for home-gardening
• 2008, CBO constructed 10 twin toilets for (boy and girl) in 10 schools in Svay Chek district, Banthey Meanchey province, Cambodia. The number of students have accessed to these toilets
• 2009,Excavated three ponds in Svay Check district for 297 families from three villages to use in dry season
• 2009,Excavated three ponds for the people (343 families)of Unlong Veng district to use in dry season
• 2009-2010, Organized integrated vocational training to 261 unemployed workers in Phnom Penh and in Banteay Meanchey province for income generation and women trafficking protection

During the prolonged civil war in Cambodia(1979 to 1990), I lived in Orphan’s center in the Site II Camp, affter I returned from Site II Camp (Khmer-Thai border) in 1990, I worked for American Journalist for UNHCR at the same year, I worked with Mine Advisory Group(MAG) in 1991, I worked for UNTAC in 1992-1993, I was elected for Chairman of Khmer Association for development of Countryside Cambodia(KAFDOC) in Kratie province in 1994-1997, I was an assistant to Mr. Greg Hunt, former chief of international Australian Observation Group for Cambodian National election in 1998, I was a teacher of Norman Institute in Phnom Penh in 1999, I am Executive Director of Cambodian Building Organization(CBO) since 2000 till now.
